The shai paramountcy has kicked against the nomination of the royal family, Nana Nako Guerni, as the queen mother of the paramountcy, and has gone to court to stop her installation.
Accordingly, five persons, who was purported to be spearheading the nomination and planned installation of Nana Guerni, have been sued by the paramountcy,which is contending that the defendants are not the kingmakers of the Shai traditional area.
They were Numo Slebedion Tawiahtsu, Albert Martey Abobi, Narh Aborbi,Ashatey Chartey, Numo Martey Agidi III and Nana Guerni, all of the Agomeda and Kodiabe families.
The action was initiated on behalf of the paramountcy by Odeopeor Martey Kodjo Ahwa IV, paramount Chief of Shai Traditional Area, and Numo King Tei Ahwa,Nar Weku Mantse and head of King Ahwa Paramountcy, on May 11.
The plaintiffs are seeking a declaration that upon a true interpretation of the customs and practices of the people of Shai, nobody can install a queen mother for the paramountcy without the active, direct, personal knowledge, consent and authority of the plaintiffs.
Further,they are seeking an order for a perpetual injunction to restrain the defendant from installing Nana Guerni as a queenmother of the Shai traditional area.
Meanwhile, the plaintiffs have also filed a motion on notice for interlocutory injunction to restrain the defendants from installing Nana Guerni as the queen mother today. The court has fixed May 28 to hear the motion.
In their statement of claim, the plaintiffs argued that “according to the practices and custom of Shai, you cannot instill a queenmother without the involvement of the sitting paramount chief , especially since the person would be working directly with him”
Further, they contend that the defendants by themselves do not have power or capacity to instill anybody including Nana Guerni, as queen mother of the traditional area.
“The defendants are being strongheaded and very determined to go ahead- unless stopped by law,” the plaintiff argued, adding that the people in the area are determine to resist the “nefarious plans of the defendants and there is danger of bloodshed if clashes take place”
